Brilliance!

The dishwasher is now in. It took two visits from the installer. The first visit, he came, he saw, he installed. He claimed it was working with no leaks. Well, good.

Uh, no. The first time I used it, it rained in the basement again. I paid you $117 for that? I could have done that for free! In fact, I already did! So, he came back. Now the dishwasher works without flooding my poor cat out of her bed.

I just wanted to share a rather amusing call from a customer. This call is on par with with the lady who was pissed about the missing "any" key.

A man calls because his system shows an order that he can't get it to fill. After a few minutes of trouble shooting, I asked him to compare the product number of the order with the product assigned to our system. The numbers aren't even close.
Man - "Well, this is the old number for the old product, we updated the number today to the new number."
Me - " Ok, let's cancel this order."
Man - "No, I want it to count."
Me - "It can't count an order for the old number using the new number, it's a safety feature."
Man - "Make it count this order for the old number then!"
Me - "Ok, do you have any of the old number we can reassign to the system so this order can count?"
Man - "No, I'm out of stock."
Me - "So, you want me to make the system count an order for a product you don't even have?"
Man - "Yes."
Me - "Sir, I can't make the system count out an order for something you don't have for it to count in the first place."
Man gets pissed and hangs up.

Honestly, my wife's houseplants are smarter than this guy.

LOTRO and Vista X-FI sound fix

If anyone is having problems getting their X-Fi to give them 5.1 surround in LOTRO with Windows Vista, there is a pretty simple fix.

1. - Go here and download the Open Al 1.1 installer

2. - Install Open Al

3. - navigate to c:/windows/System32 and find the Openal32.dll file

4. - copy Openal32.dll

5. - navigate to your LOTRO folder

6. - rename the openal32.dll in that folder to openal32.bak

7. - paste the openal32.dll you copied from the system32 folder

That's it! Now you should be able to enjoy surround sound in LOTRO again!

Excellent online comic

I've really been enjoying Looking for Group. (http://www.lfgcomic.com/) It started out as a generic WoW comic, but it's really come a long way. The setting pretty much morphed from WoW to a new fantasy world, and the art and story are both good.

Vista Lessons

Windows Vista has taught me one very important lesson:

I suck at chess.

Answering other peoples' email

I am a big research freak when it comes to beliefs, religion, God, Jesus, etc... I like to look in to things before I decide what I really believe. Long story short, I found a website that I really enjoy that denounces the Christian belief in Hell. www.bible-truths.com
Obviously the poor guy who runs the site is pretty unpopular with the masses who are comfortable following the various organized religions, so he gets a lot of hate mail.
I was inspired today to reply to one of the emails in his forums that he has yet to reply to.
The following is the email:

Ray
Hi Ray,
There's no polite way to say this... but, you are a hopeless, faithless dipshit.Jesus was a great teacher. Jesus was our most accomplished and important sage in history. And Jesus would kick your a@@ roundly and soundly for the blather you spew. Jesus, however, did not tell us he was the "son of God". He did instead, when his words are returned to the proper context, tell us that we were all (including himself) in fact, the sons and daughters of God.You, my friend and brother, have had what is referred to as a satori, an instance of enlightenment. That's terrific! But what's important to recognize is that your personal level of consciousness development determines how one interprets it.It's that way for us all. While we do all get them at one or more occasions, the way we interpret them varies greatly. And hence, so does the effect they have on others as we disseminate what we think we have learned. But when we run off as if we suddenly had "all the answers" as your absurd website does, we bear the responsibility of accomplishing far more harm than good. Self-responsibility is at the very core of Jesus' teachings; right alongside the "golden rule" and the all-important tenets of love and compassion. In a nutshell, Jesus would be disappointed in such an approach. Missing the point so completely and then willfully attempting to spread that misinterpretation without having completed your "homework" would be frowned upon by him. Please take down your website for the time being.Instead, reflect on the other possible (and much more complete) meaning of what you have learned. In that way, you will be honoring his teachings and won't instead be wreaking harm and havoc on those less fortunate than yourself. Those who have not yet recognized their own moment of enlightenment might then begin to find meaningful direction for their own lives..Then, when you have adequately clarified what you have actually learned, you'll find that you have also learned how best to disseminate it to the greatest number of people. Therein lies your true purpose. As it presently stands, it's just adding to the confusion.

Sincerely,Berd

I would like to take the opportunity to reply:
Berd,

I doubt very much Jesus would kick any ass. Jesus was the dude that preached turn the other cheek, remember?

Seriously, what religion are you? Every Christian church on the planet has done this.

As to call someone a dipshit for hosting a website that conveys his beliefs: Really? Do you really want to tell someone they don't know a thing about Jesus and then call them a dipshit? Do you see why people hate Christians now? You said it yourself: Jesus was about love and compassion. Calling people a dipshit, not so loving or compassionate.

So Berd, the next time you want to call someone names, look in the mirror. Dipshit.

Halo 2 - Vista

I think Microsoft screwed the pooch with this one. There is no graphical update, you have to buy Vista to play it, and it still costs $50 US. Wow, thanks for making me pay $50 for a three year old game! And, not only did I get to pay an exorbitant price for it, the online functions don't even work! Sweet!

I do take some of the blame. I was not forced to purchase this game, but I did because the story is good, and I couldn't play it on the Xbox. (I did own an Xbox when it came out, but I can't use those controllers for FPS games...) So, I knowingly paid for an overpriced, three year old game. Yes, I'm an idiot. I can't help it, I'm addicted.

Games for Windows - LIVE - support

Or rather, lack thereof. My wife found me a copy of Halo 2 for Vista today at Circuit City. I guess they released it early. Anyway, I couldn't sign in to GFWL, so after trying all of their troubleshooting steps online, I called the 800 they give for more info.

The 800 number is the same number for Xbox Live. In fact, it's really only a number for Xbox LIVE, since after being transferred 3 times, I never spoke with someone who knew anything about Games for Windows - LIVE. Shit, I never really even spoke to anybody who was fluent in English. After the third Indian person told me it was probably a problem with my PC and that I should contact the manufacturer, I hung up on them.

Whoever is in charge of this massive f**k-up needs to fix it. You're rolling out a product that you don't even have support for. On top of that, the people who support Xbox LIVE don't speak English. Well, they speak it - poorly- but they don't really understand it. With all of the money Microsoft makes, you'd think they could splurge for native English speakers for their support departments.

Nor'Easter Lan - The Aftermath

I was away the entire weekend at the Nor'Easter Lan party just outside of Boston. I'm not sure if it was the 5 hour drive there, or the fact that I was starving after we set up our PCs, but I just wasn't in the mood. After we ate and had a few drinks, I still wasn't really in the mood. After we slept all night and came back in the afternoon, I still wasn't in the mood. Maybe I just don't like Lan Parties anymore, or maybe I just didn't like this one.

Anyway, I got so bored, I ended up reinstalling Windows Vista the last hour we were there for something to do. At least I'm set for all the DirectX 10 games coming out soon.

Speaking of DX10 games, I played the demo of Lost Planet last night. I could really tell the difference between the DX9 and DX10 versions, so I'm psyched to have some full version games come out.
