Hubless Wheels

Well, it's no flying car, but it's still pretty sci-fi cool.

Chuck vs the Vogon Poetry

I love the show Chuck, and little references to awesome things that they just toss in make me love it even more.

Chuck's ex makes a reference to Vogon poetry in one episode. In case you're not a well read sci-fi geek, Vogon poetry is from the super awesome book - and shitty movie - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth

The DVD movie Stargate: The Ark of Truth was released yesterday in North America. The 101 minute film brings closure to the story arc of the 9th and 10th seasons of Stargate: SG-1.

Without writing up a full review, I'd just like to say I really enjoyed the movie. I'm a hug Stargate fan, and this was a nice way to wrap things up for people like me. The story was akin to a 3 episode arc, but with bigger and better effects. If you liked seasons 9 and 10 (some didn't) then you will probably enjoy this.

Now I'm even more stoked for the next DVD movie, Stargate: Continuum. And hey, Richard Dean Anderson is in the next one!

Sanctuary - Part Deux

Watched the first webisode tonight. Here are my thoughts:

1 - Interesting - The webisode really pulled me in and made me want to find out what is going on.

2 - TOO DAMN SHORT! - TV episodes are short enough at around 40 minutes, 17 minutes for the premiere is annoyingly short!

3 - Cameos - I love David Hewlett, so that was great. I recognized the guy that plays Major Lourne in Atlantis, as well as one of the techs from the Daedalus, also cool. It's always nice to see people playing different characters.

All in all, I like it so far, but again, 17 minutes is really too short to tell if it is going to be great or not.

Sanctuary

The new Sci-Fi series starring Amanda Tapping from Stargate: Sg-1 premiers today!
It's only 6.99 for the first 4, 15 minute episodes. I purchased the bundle because I am banking on it being a decent series, but you can pay 1.99 per episode if you're the cautious type.

I'm going to watch the first episode after work tonight, so I'll let you (my two-or-so readers) know how it is later.

Doh! You can watch the first 4 webisodes for free right on the website. You only have to purchase them if you want to download them.

Daybreak

I've been watching this show on ABC.com. When my wife and I first saw the ads on TV (Waaaaay back before Lost took a few months off...) we thought it looked pretty stupid. Well, I love it when I am proven wrong. No, I don't, but I love that I was wrong about this show. No, I don't. Anyway, I'm glad the show is good.

It's a take on the classic sci-fi plot that has been in just about every sci-fi show I have watched: A guy is stuck in a time-loop that has him repeating the same day over and over until he figures out why or fixes something. Hell, Bill Murray even starred in a film with the same concept.

At first I couldn't see how this would be interesting if it was dragged out over the course of an entire season of a show, but this show is really doing a good job of keeping it flowing. I'm glad to see that they did 13 episodes and stopped. I'm about halfway through watching them, and it seems like 13 episodes is enough to cover the plot, but not enough to let it get old. If this ends well, I'd even be willing to buy this on DVD, it's that good so far. Hell, I'd be willing to watch another season, as long as it wasn't the same guy. (I doubt it would be, since Taye Diggs is supposed to be on some medical show soon. The one with the guy from those 80s movies whose name I cannot remember, probably because I don't like those type of shows...)

While I am raving about how good this show is, I have to make mention of my two favorite time-looping episodes from other shows.

The first is, of course, the Stargate Sg-1 episode Window of Opportunity, where O'Niell and T'Ealc are repeating the same day. While attempting to unravel the mystery, they take some time to enjoy the lack of consequences for their actions. (Driving golf balls through the Stargate, kissing Carter, etc...) This episode is actually one of my all time favorite Stargate episodes, aside from being my favorite time-loop episode, due to the humor.

The second is an episode of the show 7 Days. The show dealt with time-travel anyway, but when the main character gets stuck repeating a loop, he goes ballistic. Instead of waiting for things to keep happening to him, he heads them off with hilarious results. (Walking in to a diner, handcuffing one man to his stool, knocking the sheriff out, then sitting down and asking for a cup of coffee without explanation.) (Episode: Deja Vu All Over Again)

Stargate, Sci-Fi, and ratings

Well, I guess the rating for Stargate: Sg-1 and Stargate: Atlantis have dropped since the mid-season cliff-hangers. Gee, I can't imagine why. Who the hell where the geniuses that came up with a mid-season break of 6 months? I barely remember what happened last week, you want me to recall what was going on in this show 6 months ago?

Why is this such a trend? Every show that does this reports drops in ratings. Duh, don't do it then!
